Though Mudder è una società che organizza eventi sportivi estremi in Nord America, Europa, Australia, Giappone e Africa del Sud, è attiva dal 2010 e ha sede a New York. Gli eventi di Tough Mudder sono percorsi ad ostacoli che si estendono per 15-20 chilometri e che costringono i partecipanti a mettere a dura prova le proprie capacità fisiche. Lungo il percorso, i concorrenti devono affrontare diverse prove tra cui percorsi da fare nel fango, sospesi sulle braccia, strisciando sotto il filo spinato, correndo tra le fiamme o nell’acqua ghiacciata.
I
principi di queste competizioni si basano sulla solidarietà tra
concorrenti – che sono obbligati ad aiutarsi durante il percorso – e sul
divertimento, mentre il ricavato va in parte all’associazione Wounded
Warrior Project, che si occupa dei militari statunitensi feriti in
guerra.
Un punto fermo di questi eventi è l’autoironia, scrivono gli
organizzatori sul sito: «Dopo l’estenuante corsa i concorrenti sono
attesi da una birra, un sorriso e un concerto rock. È abbastanza
difficile prendersi sul serio quando si è completamente coperti di
fango».
